Chicks are Flying the Coop!! |
|

Today is the last day our chicks will be with us. They will be heading to the Rosso farm, where they can live like...well.....chickens. We are sad to see them go, but know that they are ready for more room to run around, play and grow. We will miss them. We have asked Mr Rosso if he would be able to bring a chicken back to school later in June so we can see how much he/she has grown. We will post pictures so all of our "chick hatching watchers" can see, too.
All the Smarty-partardy's would like to thank Mr Rosso, and Will, for helping to make this experience possible. It was such a great learning project and was fun, too!
Mrs S and grade 1-2 |

The school is just a buzzing and a "peeping" as the grade 1's, 1/2's and the rest of the
staff and students anxiously watch the hatching of the eggs in Mrs. Shillington's room,
and the Caterpillars in Mrs. Scandrett's room who will transform into chrysalises soon!
As of right now there have been 8 chicks and 4 more look like they could hatch today!!
Monday the live webcam will be moved to watch the chicks - stay tuned!!
If you look at the Butterfly link, you can see that the caterpillars are busy
eating and getting bigger every day! They will soon begin to make their chrysalises.
That should happen on the weekend! We are excited to be able to watch! After 1
week of quietly transforming in the chrysalis we will see them arrive as beautiful
Painted Lady butterflies!

Grade 1/2 Class are Hatching Chicks! |
|
We are hatching chicks in the grade 1-2 classroom. We got them from Mr. Rosso on
April 18. We have 42 eggs. We put them into the incubator and set the temperature
to a little less than 100 degrees. We have a yellow tray that turns the eggs from
side to side. Mrs Shillington has to put water in the tray so the chicks can get
out on May 8th! We are very anxious to “candle” the eggs and see how the chicks
are developing. There are scheduled to hatch in 6 days.

Below: This is a little tough to see, but we candled this egg and the dark side on the left is the chick.
The light side next to the flashlight is the air sac. We are hoping this means there is a viable chick inside!

Grade 1's Painted Lady Butterfly Larvae Have Arrived! |
|
We put each larvae in their own container. They are eating now. In about 2 weeks
they will each make a chrysalis. Then after 1 more week they will turn into butterflies!
We are excited to watch them grow and change!
Here is a report of what happened today:
The larvae arrived. It came with: cups and lids, food, gloves, a dish to mix the
food and a spoon.
Packing foam was around it to keep it safe. It came in an airplane to Regina.
Then it got delivered to school.

It was time to put them in their own containers.
We watched a video to show us how to take care of our larvae.
We washed our hands.
We put gloves on.
We mixed water with the food powder. |
