Olympic fever has hit Craik School |
Craik School hosted their own version of the Winter Olympics on February 8th, 2010. There were 12 countries participating in 15 events throughout the day. The most popular event was “The Polar Bear Hunt”. The easiest events were the “Bob sled” and the “Mountain Luge”. At the end of the day, points were tallied and team Russia received the gold medal. Second place team to receive the silver medal was team USA. There was a three way tie for the bronze medal. Teams UK, Canada and China shared the bronze medal. The school would like to thank Home and School for a delicious hotdog lunch, the SRC for the hot chocolate and heart suckers as well as staff and community members for their donations of treats we enjoyed all day. We would like to thank Mr. Frank Watkins for bringing his original Olympic 2010 torch to start our activities. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Owens for tallying the points and the community members who helped in a variety of ways to make the day such a success.

Craik School and Community have a SOUL. |
During this time of year there are many people who are not worried about what they are going to buy for Christmas gifts, they worry about what they are going to eat. So Craik School decided that they would practice the gift of giving and raise money to send to SOULS HARBOUR in Regina. At the Christmas concert the play focused around the topic of the gift of giving, so we set up a sign, sent out a note and that night collected $450.00. Souls Harbour campaign focuses on $3.11 to pay for one meal this holiday season. We were able to buy 144 meals. Thanks to all that donated to this. Remember that the gift is in the giving. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Trip to Ottawa - Encounters with Canada |
From November 8th to November 14th, 2009, the grade 10s and 12s from Craik School took part in a program called Encounters With Canada in Ottawa. It is Canada's largest youth forum and the theme of the week was "Canada Remembers - Le Canada se Souvient". It was a very busy week, filled with workshops, activities, outings; including the Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa, media releases, team-building and general FUN! They met many amazing people, notably Major General Lewis MacKenzie, Major McCullough, the Honourable Kenney (Immigration), The Honourable Thompson (Veteran Affairs), the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of York, along with other participants from nearly every province and territory. Our students had a chance to share their Saskatchewan culture and learn about other places. They also learned about the importance of remembering Canada's men and women who have served their country through military service. Much of the program was offered in both official languages so it was a good opportunity to pick up some French. The friendships and experiences will last for a long time and getting to see another part of Canada will always be a growing and learning experience.

Tanner Spencer from Craik, SK, attended team Canada's World Junior top 35 camp in Orlando, Florida from October 5th to October 15th. Tanner is the youngest Saskatchewan player ever chosen to go. The majority of the team was from BC, Ontario, and Quebec. One player was chosen from the maritimes, one from Manitoba, one from Saskatchewan and two from Alberta. Tanner started pitching the first game in Orlando, started the fourth game and closed the last game. He gave up no earned runs on six innings pitched. Congratulations Tanner.
