Youth Leadership Award

On June 8, 2018 the Riverview Collegiate Treaty Four Group was awarded the Prairie Action Foundation Youth Leadership Award at Government House in Regina. The award also included a healthy grant to help the group with future projects and to help keep the momentum of the group going forward.

The Treaty Four group was created as an extracurricular club by Kelly Grass as a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. We believe that Canada`s Indigenous history is part of who we are as Canadians. The goals of the group are to help indigenous students learn about their own culture, for non-indigenous students to learn about indigenous culture and for both to become leaders in the Truth and Reconciliation process.

We are now ending our second year as a group that meets regularly to explore, discuss and experience indigenous culture. The group is open to all students, indigenous and non-indigenous. Treaty Four meetings always include traditional foods such as soup and bannock which are prepared by members of the Treaty Four group and includes Riverview staff and students as well as people from the Southhill community. We also invite guests from outside the community to participate in our activities.

Meetings and food are a large part of what we do but we use these lunch time feasts to learn about indigenous culture and to plan events that we will be participating in. Since Riverview Collegiate has a tipi, there is always a demand for the group to do tipi raisings. We have performed these along with tipi teachings at many schools within the Prairie South school division, and also at major events such as Treaty Flag raisings, National Indigenous Peoples Day and Pow Wow`s.

This year the Treaty Four group made a proposal to the Riverview staff and were able to establish a daily smudge location in the school to which all are invited. The group has big plans for next year, thanks to the award money we will be building drums, doing indigenous crafts and learning pow wow and round dance songs.
