Slam Poetry Presentation

“The core of poetry is about telling a story” began Johnny Trinh, as he presented to groups of Middle Years’ and High School students in several Prairie South schools in November.  Through a variety of thought-provoking games and prompts, Trinh invited students to engage in Spoken Word Poetry—the same style of poetry that is often presented at Slam Poetry competitions.  Trinh, a poet, actor, writer and entertainer, told the students that “…as an artist, we comment on the world; we give people a new perspective on things.”  The students’ response was energetic and creative, to say the least, and they were compelled to step outside of what they might consider to be comfortable and to risk sharing their thoughts and emotions in a safe, non-evaluative space.  Trinh will be hosting and performing at a Performers’ Café  in Moose Jaw on November 24th at 7:00 pm at the Common Café and Bakery, 23 Main St. N.  Trinh’s presentation was facilitated through a partnership between the Festival of Words and Prairie South School Division.
