Farm Safety Day

On Thursday March 17, 2016 Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions (SAASE), Red Coat Ag Society, Progressive Agriculture Foundation, Community Initiatives Fund (CIF), Ministry of Agricultural, SaskPower, Farm Credit Cooperation, and Prairie South Schools hosted a Safety Day at the Prince of Wales Center in Assiniboia. There were 200 grade 7 and 8 students from Assiniboia, Bengough, Coronach, Glentworth, Kincaid, Lafleche, Mankota and Mossbank in attendance.

The day was designed for students to be exposed to safety hazards in which they may encounter in the, farm, work place and their daily lives. Students participated in 12 interactive stations. Thank you to the following presenters for their knowledge and insight:

·         Assiniboia Volunteer Fire Department (Fire Safety)
·         Gary Jonescu and Mike Broder (Firearm Safety)
·         South Country Equipment (PTO Safety)
·         Bourassa’s (ATV Safety)
·         SGI (Impaired vision)

Terri Kerbrat from Saskatchewan Safety Council, provided a keynote talk the importance of being safe on the job. She highlighted her tragic and life-changing experience that occurred on her family farm. She left students with information about their rights as the future workforce.
·         The right to know the hazards at work and how to control them
·         The right to find and control workplace hazards
·         The right to refuse work, which you believe is unusually dangerous
