Cardboard Boat Races

On Thursday and Friday, May 10th and 11th, grade 8 students from King George, Sunningdale, Chaplin, Mortlach, Caronport, Gravelbourg, William Grayson, and Mankota had the opportunity to compete in Prairie South’s Cardboard Boat Races 2018.

Armed with cardboard, duct tape and a few other odds and end, these students used their skills and ingenuity to transform these materials into a vessel for the water.  Not only did the boats need to be quick, they had to be capable of carrying passengers as well.  The student learning outcomes, were to design and construct a boat with only the supplied materials in two hours. During the challenge the students needed to complete the task of researching and coming up with their own design (in the classroom), look at principal structure, rigidity, water displacement, propulsion, buoyancy, adhesives and bonding, teamwork, and FUN!

Prairie South would like to thank the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Sportsplex for their generous donation of their rink and pool for us to construct and test our final designs!
