ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation and Honda Canada created Family Literacy Day to encourage families to read and learn together. Since 1999, thousands of Canadians have taken time on January 27th to engage in events and activities focusing on reading. Research suggests that having a parent or other caring person read aloud with their children helps children learn listening skills, vocabulary and language skills, as well as develop imagination and creativity (Family Literacy Foundation, 2001).
