There is a new group at Mossbank School called YAP. As a group of five (consisting of Mickey Hoffman, Lisa Meili, Jaclyn Kiel, Sarah Myles and Kory Ray) we went to Saskatoon for a three day conference about alcohol awareness. The conference was led by the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute and Youth Launch. The main purpose was to get youth from the ages of 14 to 24 to address the issue of alcohol awareness and develop some programs or events to take back to their communities. We learned that statistically speaking, you addressing youth is more effective than a lecture from adults that can't really relate. We learned, mostly, about FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) and this information really hit home. This topic grabbed our attention and we worked with several other groups from around Saskatchewan (including Regina, Prince Albert, Ile-a-la-cross, Saskatoon, and Rosetown) finding ways to spread our message. In Mossbank, we are planning to have several little pieces of alcohol awareness facts, and put them on radio stations, such as Country 100. We also made a video ad entitled "Bush-party AD", which we will post on the school website. We will hopefully, be having a Health Fair at school. It is somewhat like a Career Fair, we will set up booths and have speaker sessions on certain topics (including FASD, Body Image, Drugs, ADD and Alcohol.) We worked hard, had a great time and are greatful for the experience and opportunity. Thank you to Mr. Boughen, our principal, who brought the conference to our attention, Mrs. Marcia Ray for chaperoning (so much fun), Saskatchewan Prevention Institute for hosting, and Youth Launch for facilitating. Watch and listen for our upcoming events.
