May 3rd, Mortlach School was host to Middle Years Conference 4 Change.
" It is our hope that we can encourage Middle Years students’ participation in local and global
change by hosting this mini-conference. This conference was organized by 17 Middle Years
students who have questions about their world and like to be active while learning. Most
importantly, this group,“middle4change" has been raising awareness about social justice
issues all year."
There were 115 students and teachers from Mortlach, Avonlea, Chaplin, Assiniboia, Bengough and
Craik. They wanted to help educate other middle years students on issues not commonly
discussed by the media.

| Water Workshop
Facilitators: Engineers Without Borders.
This is a hands on experience. EBW did a workshop on water
filtration in developing countries. This workshop is a very educational and fun way to learn about water.

Healthy Cooking Session
Facilitator: Marg Apperley
This workshop is hands on. In this workshop we will be
learning how to make simple, healthy snacks and smoothies.
We are doing this session to show middle years students that
healthy eating can be fun and delicious

Healthy Relationships
In Healthy Relationships our speakers are going to talk about knowing when you are in a healthy relationship or an abusive relationship and how to spot one.

Think Before you Act
In Think Before you Act our speakers will be talking
about the consequences of not thinking in a certain situation
where you would normally think nothing of it.
Drugs and Alcohol
In Drugs and Alcohol our speaker will be talking about drugs and their affect in a teenage life and how devastating it can be.

Clear cutting
-This workshop is a hands on learning experience
on the negatives of clear cutting. In this workshop
we will be painting pots to plant our very own trees in.
We will also have a small video presentation.
This will be a double session. The last half hour
of the second session we will be going on a walk
around town to identify trees.
Garbage Art
Facilitators: Jean Bell
This workshop is a hands on experience that teaches you how to reuse. In this workshop you will be reusing garbage to make art. This is an excellent workshop if you enjoy creating art.
Finding Your Voice
Facilitator: Mrs. Alison Lewis
This workshop is about finding your own voice with
drama. Everybody that goes to this workshop will be involved in a fun and exciting way! Our leader has lot’s of experience with teaching drama
The keynote speaker was Mr. Angus McIntosh. His presentation was on Digital awareness.
Mr. McIntosh is a teacher at Central Collegiate in Moose Jaw. He teaches ELA, Health, Entrepreneurship, and Media Studies. He also interened here at Mortlach school at the beginning of his career.

Expressing Kindness
Facilitator: Sandra Zachery
This workshop is a hand’s on activity and a double
workshopin sessions # 1, 4.
We will be painting a mural with positive messages.

Clear cutting
-This workshop is a hands on learning experience on the negatives of clear cutting. In this workshop we will be painting pots to plant our very own trees in. We will also have a small video presentation. This will be a double session. The last half hour of the second session we will be going on a walk around town to identify trees.

Animal Safety
Facilitator: Karla Pratt , Humaine Society
This workshop will not only talk about the safety of house
hold pets, such as dogs and cats, but it was also be about
the safety of wild animals, such as Deer, Elk and Moose etc.
Also Karla will be bringing a dog with her to
demonstrate how treating an animal with as much
respect as a person can affect it’s behavior.

How To Spend Your Time Better
Facilitator: Mr. Albert Saas
(Former teacher/environmentalist)
With: Shawn, Sean, Chase, Keegan
This is a workshop discussing how to spend
your time better and the benefits of doing
so but if you are thinking that you will be
sitting around listening to a lecture for 50 minutes, your
wrong! Because there is better ways to spend your time!

April 18th, we had a general assembly:
- Welcome to new students: Rayland and Keegan.
- the Grade 1-2 celebrated their learning by showing us their
Smarty Petardy T-shirts
- Recognition of Sr. Students who have been published in literary journals
- Students and staff sang Happy Birthday to Mrs. Gusa.
- Dorothy Binell of the Caron Legion presented awards to the
following students:
Dru Rogers: Black and White Poster, Intermediate level.
1st place at Zone Level: Medal for Black & White Poster.
1st place at Districk Level: $30 and certificate.
3rd place at Provincial level: $25 and certficate.

MORTLACH SCC
The Annual Meeting of the Mortlach School Community Council was held on Wednesday, April 24th at the School. Cheryl Searle gave a report on the council’s operations and Colleen Campbell gave the financial report for the September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012 year.
Marg Apperley and Jan Nelson have one year left on their terms, with Colleen Campbell, Cheryl Searle and Rod Ward’s positions being up this year. Elections were held for three, two year positions on the Council.
Cheryl Searle and Rod Ward did not seek re-election. Colleen Campbell, Angela Molde and Yolanda Moore were elected to fill the three positions.
The first meeting with the new council will be on Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00 pm in the Staff Room at the School. All parents are welcomed to attend.
Rod Ward has been a member of the Mortlach SCC since its inception in November of 2006 and Cheryl Searle joined in October of 2008. We would like to thank both Rod and Cheryl for their contributions to the SCC and to our School.

April 11th. Grades 6-8 joined forces with grade 9 & 10 for
science experiments. They studied electricity.

March 7th, the Outdoor Ed. Class had a Winter Carnival Fundraiser.
It was a great day! There was a hotdog lunch, horse wagon rides,
and lots of fun and games!
Thank you to the community and parents who came to support
the students and joined in the fun!

Agriculture in the Classroom. March 6th.
Tara MacLachlan and B.J. Crosbie, two local agriculture producers,
came to give presentations in our school, for grades 1-8.
Tara has a sheep farm. She talked about wool and what
products
are made from wool.

She also brought along one of her trained dogs who helps
keep the sheep safe from predators
|
B.J. Crosbie is a dairy producer. She read a
story to the
Grade 1 - 5's. And she discussed what
products are made
from the milk they produce.

Some of our students attended We Day in Saskatoon on
February 27, 2013. There were 15,000 students from Sk. attending!!
