Ms. Johnstone's Very Busy Grade 4/5 Class PDF Print E-mail
Ms. Johnstone’s grade 4/5 class did an awesome art project with plasticine. We got the idea from a book illustrator  Barbara Reid. She does all the pictures in plasticine.  Barbara was born in Toronto, Ontario, and has lived there ever since. After winning a creative writing contest in grade six, she decided to become a writer when she grew up.  By the end of high school it was clear that, although she liked writing, she liked drawing best of all. She decided to attend an art college.  One of her assignments was to make a dimensional picture out of plasticine. She decided then to make all her illustrations in plasticine.

So, Ms. Johnstone’s class did pictures from her books. We studied the pictures and had them in front of us. We took the colours and made the pictures out of plasticine. They looked really similar. We used many different techniques including spreading, squishing simple shapes, rolling, adding texture, and any more. I have to say they look very similar to the real pictures.  Ms. Johnstone is very lucky to have such an artistic and talented classroom.

                MAGNETIC MADDNESS!!!

by Emily MacKenzie

Our class just had a very fun and interesting day in Science. We learned all about magnets. We spent two periods using magnets of all sorts. We used cow magnets, doughnut magnets, disk magnets, and bar magnets. We used spring scales to measure the gravitational force of a magnet on an object. Then we went to different stations to do different experiments. In the experiments we used iron filings. What we did for one of them was to get a sheet of glass and put the iron filings on it. Then we would put the cow magnet underneath and move the filings around. Seeing that the filings are somewhat magnetic, they stick so you can move them around underneath. It was a fun day and our class hopes to do it again sometime soon.

Totem Poles

IMG_0685Our class has been studying First Nations Tribes of Canada. One of the projects we did was totem poles. Our totem poles had animals that showed our introspections of our personal characteristics. We each picked six animals that represented our view of ourselves. Some examples are:

Wolf: a very powerful totem who can help people that are sick or in need
Sea turtle: this totem represents mother earth
Raven: this totem represents a trickster

Julia showcases her totem pole (picture to the left).

Raven: introspection, courage, self-knowledge, magic
Dragon: longevity, richness, properity, infinity, wisdom, power, fiery
Snail: protective, aware, solitary
Butterfly: meta morphosis, transformational, balance, grace, ability to accept change
Cobra: swift and decisive
Fox: cunning, agility, quick-witted, diplomacy, wilderness, feminine, magic of camouflage, shape-shifting and invisibility
