On Friday, May 25th a handful of KG students had the privilege of Skyping with authors Susan McClelland and Mariatu Kamara who wrote the book, The Bite of the Mango. Brittnee Dunlop, a grade 8 student, recalls that afternoon.
In our grade 8 reading club, we read “Bite of the Mango” with Mrs. Kirk once a week.
Bite of the Mango is a true story about a girl who was from Africa 16 years ago when a war was going on. Rebel soldiers were people who would go town to town destroying everything and cutting off people’s hands and telling them to go to the government for help. Mariatu Kamara was 12 years old when this happened to her. After all the hard ships she faced, losing a child, trying to do things with no hands, going to refugee camps with no support from parents, she finally made it to Canada.
She’s now 26 years old, living in Canada with a new baby. On Friday, May 25th, our reading group had the chance to Skype with the author, Susan McClelland, and Mariatu, the main character. It was an awesome opportunity and it also made the book feel so much more real. Getting to see Mariatu herself, knowing everything she’s been though, was crazy. We all asked her a few questions to both Suzan and Mariatu to understand more of what happened.
It took us a while to get set up, but it was well worth it! I hope more reading groups get to have the same opportunity as me.
