Privacy

Information related to activities within schools, or about specific individuals (students or staff), may be protected under The Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The Act governs the collection and use of private personal information, limiting how and with whom such information can be shared.

As an example, most disciplinary matters would be private and confidential, with information shared only with those involved. Similarly, information relating to specific student needs, records, health status or achievement is considered private.

Spokespeople

In most cases, the Chair of the Board of Education and the Director of Education are the media spokespeople for the division. Their broad knowledge of the division, its policies and its priorities help to ensure information is accurate and complete.

On certain occasions, the Director may designate another individual to speak to the media, but as a rule, we do not expect or require employees to respond to media requests.

To request an interview, contact the Communications Coordinator or the Executive Assistant to the Director.

Principals may choose to speak to the media on topics specific to their school – or they may defer questions to the Director of Education.

Media Access

The division reserves the right to limit media access to its schools in order to ensure a secure, non-threatening environment conducive to learning – the division’s primary purpose.

While schools may invite or allow the media to attend special events and celebrations from time to time, reporters should be aware that they will be accompanied by a staff member (or volunteer) and that access to the school will be limited to the area(s) where the event is taking place.

Media seeking access to the schools on their own initiative must have prior permission [ Media Access form] from the Director of Education (or designate) and the principal. In general, reporters should provide at least 24 hours advance notice to allow for the coordination of such requests.
