With the aim of promoting numeracy and interest in math, GES students participated in a world record breaking online mathematical competition. On March 3, over 100 GES students headed to the computer lab throughout the day to compete with students from 234 other countries. Each game started with a map of the world indicating where each game's competitors were from. The games lasted 1 minute each, during which time the students attempted to answer more computation questions than their competitors. Throughout the World Math Day challenge, GES students answered an astonishing 29 106 questions. Congratulations to Eliza who achieved the highest score of 42 questions answered correctly in 1 minute! This year's competition included 1 133 246 students and 56 082 schools from 235 countries. A new world record was set by answering 479 732 613 questions correctly throughout the competition. Past competition results show that students will make significant improvements in their mental arithmetic skills and have fun in the process. Visit: www.worldmathday.com for more information.

GES and GHS students, staff and families have once again worked together to support a great cause. Many activities have taken place at our two schools over the last week. Fundraisers included a penny parade at GES, "dress down" donations from staff, four hot lunches prepared by GHS students, the selling of Telemiracle hands at GHS, as well as a GHS class competition for the highest donations. We are extremely pleased to announce that our donation total was $1 500 by Thursday, March 4th. Many thanks to Mrs. Stark and her volunteers for organizing the fundraising events at both of our schools again this year! Great job!

GES Arts Education Gets a Boost |
|

The GES drama and music education programs have been further strengthened. Gravelbourg's Artist in Residence, Clare Middleton, spends many hours at GES working with students and teachers to provide an enriching drama experience to all students. Students and teachers have gained from her professional experience and her willingness to share ideas and suggestions. We are all very appreciative for all Clare does!
The GES music education program was given a financial boost early this year as we were selected as recipients for a ARTSMARTS grant. This grant will enable a local musician, Mrs. Leanne Mann, to work with students and teachers in small group settings over the next few months. A portion of this grant will also be used to purchase additional musical instruments for our music room and programs. A final musical presentation will be made for the community. Stay tuned for more information.
