Our Name

Prairie South School Division is our official legal name. However in copy and conversion we use friendlier descriptions like Prairie South or Prairie South Schools that shift the focus away from the division and onto our schools.

Another factor when creating our new brand is to overcome confusion at the provincial level around our name. Prairie South is often confused with one of three provincial school divisions who have Prairie as part of their name – Prairie Valley and Prairie Spirit School Division – we also share the acronym 'PSSD' with Prairie Spirit.

Staff/Students

Our Students
As of Sept. 30, 2011, there were 6,635 students in Prairie South School Division. Kindergarten and Prekindergarten students are counted as one-half of a full-time student (since they attend only half-time); thus the full-time equivalent enrolment for the division – the amount the province previously used to calculate per-student funding – was 6,312.5 as of Sept. 30, 2011.

Since not all of our staff work full-time, the total number of people working is actually higher than the total number of positions available – which is closer to 990 full-time equivalents.

2011 - 2012 Budget

Revenues are anticipated to be $84.7 million with expenses at $86.5 million, with a deficit of 1.8 million dollars. The deficit is due to budgeting for extensive maintenance work required on Prairie South schools. The work does not qualify for capital projects funding from the Ministry of Education, and will be paid for by accumulated surplus. Another factor in the deficit is the significant increase in amortization costs.
