Matthew Gourlie   On a day when high seeds were being stunned in the NCAA basketball tournament, the top-ranked Central Cyclones made sure they avoided a similar fate. The Cyclones got off to a winning start at their 4A boys regional tournament game with a 94-41 win over the Estevan Elecs.“We played great,” said Central head coach Leigh Pethick. “We stumbled a little bit, but we came back hard in the second half. The guys bought into the fact that we weren’t playing our best.
“They knew what they were doing wrong. They took it upon themselves and it was nice to see the effort and intensity.”The Cyclones play with a lot of tempo and the ease of their win should help them feel a little more refreshed before they meet Regina O’Neill at noon today in the regional final. The winner will advance to Hoopla in Regina next weekend. All 13 Cyclones scored against Estevan. Jonathan Phillips led the Cyclones with 12, but scored all of his points in the first half. Devon Parker added 11 and Charlie MacDonald and Bryce Marcotte both scored 10 points. Estevan’s John Elder scored 19 points for the Elecs.

Fillmore Falcons guard Logan Fahlman pushes in Central's Sidney Holoien during their opening game at the Moose Jaw Invitational Girls Basketball tournament at Central on Thursday evening

It wasn’t the best game the Central Cyclones have played this year, but they worked hard and earned the 78-50 victory over the Fillmore Falcons to kick off their start to the Moose Jaw Invitational Girls Basketball tournament this weekend.

“It’s a lot of ball in three days, but it’s nice to be able to play that and take one game into the next,” said Cyclones head coach Jocelyn Wigmore. “It was nice to get a win back under our belts.”

The Cyclones were able to use their bench players more often, as most players saw equal amount of floor time. Their regular point guard, Kelsey Heebner was not at the game, so some players had to play in position they were not used to playing.

“It was nice to play everybody and get everyone in,” said Wigmore. “We didn’t have Kelsey tonight, which hurt us. I think the people that did play guard tonight, played well considering they’ve never played it before and that isn’t their main position.”

Central’s wanted to focus on some things in this opening game on both ends of the court, especially trying to find the open man more often instead of just throwing the ball into the post position to Alex Butler.

“We just have to get into the habit of cutting to the open spaces and looking for those people at the right time and not forcing it,” Wigmore said. “We are just trying to create a balanced offence where our posts are generating scoring opportunities and our guards are generating scoring opportunities. By doing that, you don’t have a one dimensional offence, we are just trying to create opportunities in all positions.”

The Central Cyclones senior boys basketball team almost let their first win slip through their fingers as constant turnovers and costly fouls allowed Peacock a fighting chance to come from behind, but the Cyclones held on for the 74-71 victory to start their season.

“We got close and then they went ahead a little bit,” said Peacock’s head coach Bryan Adams. “It was a very good game.”

The Cyclones came out with a great start, leading 22-8 after the first quarter and controlling the speed of the play.

“You think you have things under control and then the next second, you don’t,” said Central’s head coach Leigh Pethick.

The Toilers then were able to take advantage of some costly turnovers by the Cyclones and players getting into some early foul trouble to score 17 points in the second quarter and erase Central’s lead to just eight points. Peacock was able to out rebound the Cyclones for much of the game which allowed them to have more control of the play.

“In the second half, I thought we handled pressure much better and did some things we were suppose to do, but with that being said, it takes time,” said Adams.  “We are going to go through growing pains, but we are very pleased with the long potential for growth.”

Peacock used turnovers and bonus free throws to create chances and get back into the game in the third quarter. Heading into the final frame, the Toilers were only down three points with Central feeling the heat of letting costly mistakes determine the outcome.

“It was a little disappointing that our guys didn’t learn how the referees were calling the game and progressed throughout the game,” said Pethick. “We just kept doing the same things, kept getting into foul trouble, kept sending them to the free throw line…so that was a little upsetting.”

With less than a minute and half left in the final frame, Toilers’ Peyton Hillsdon scores on a lay up to tie the game at 69. Hillsdon was fouled on the play and scored two free throws to give Peacock their first lead of the game. Central’s Jonathan Phillips answered with a three pointer to retake the lead. Central’s Brayden Mackey would score two free throws with 12 seconds left in the game to secure the victory for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones battled through a lot of adversity to join their city rivals in the 10-team provincial field.

“The kids were troopers this weekend. We’ve been going through sickness, strep throat and injuries,” said Central head coach Brad Hennenfent.

“They just kept on playing. They showed a lot of guts. I was very impressed with the kids.”

The Central boys wouldn’t have had their league season end on a better note than sweeping the league final over Caronport on Tuesday evening. Throughout the regular season, the Cyclones went undefeated, only losing a couple sets in their final game but wouldn’t let that happen with the championship on the line.

In a very close and exciting game that could have went either way, the Cyclones needed three sets to beat the Cougars, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-19 to secure their second championship in as many years.

“It felt awesome and we had a strong season last season and we just came out even stronger this year and it was really good just to work hard and come together as a team,” said Central Grade 12 student Steve Martyniuk.

In the first set, the Cougars came out strong with giant blocks from Carter Chute and Brendan Adrian. Central’s Jonathan Phillips has been a force all season with powerful spikes and huge blocks, but early in the first set seemed to be a bit rattled but was able to find his game and finished strong.

In the second set, Caronport’s Ben Martin had major blocks on the net, which led to some crucial points for the Cougars. Central’s Zack Schutte had a strong serving game as well. Central had to came from a 12-6 deficit to win the middle set.

In the final set, Caronport came back with much needed confidence and Central made a couple of mistakes on match point to allow the Cougars to try for a comeback, but to no avail.

“I am super proud of our guys,” said Caronport’s head coach Shane Sowden. “We were right there, it could have gone either way. If a few things went our way, we could have won all three sets, but volleyball is a funny game that way.

“We just made a few little mistakes, more than them in the end, but we were right there.”

Despite the flat start by the Cyclones to start the game, head coach Shaune Gray was nervous, but knew the boys would pull together and battle back.

“It feels good,” said Shaune Gray. “We had a slow start, but that was all credit to Caronport, they stepped up their match — they were digging, they were passing and they had us on the rope the whole game.”

Central perseveres to beat Peacock

In a game befitting their long rivalry, the Central Cyclones and Peacock Tornadoes traded big plays Saturday.

In the end the Cyclones made more of them as they scored three second half touchdowns to beat Peacock 22-13 in the Moose Jaw High School Football League semifinal. The win ended the Tornadoes’ three year reign as city champions.

The Cyclones will meet the Vanier Vikings in the city final next Saturday.

“It feels so good,” said Central senior Chris Brennan who lost to Peacock in the playoffs two of the past three years. “It was intense every single play. It was just hard-hitting, intense, all game.”

Though the first half finished scoreless, there was no shortage of drama or desire on the field as both sides made a number of big plays.

“These boys really rose to the occasion,” said Central head coach Colin Belsher. “It was 0-0 at the half and it was a test of their character. A lot of these Grade 12s took it personally and stepped up and carried the team in the second half.”

Early in the third quarter Central receiver Daniel Bjorge scored on a 62 yard pass and run from Bren Forbes to break the deadlock.

Later in the third quarter Jacques Van Heerden scored on a five-yard run to put the Cyclones ahead 13-0.

Peacock conceded a safety rather than kick into the stuff wind and were down 15-0. The Peacock defence responded when Clay Ludwar’s 30-yard interception return gave the Tornadoes the ball deep in Central territory. They finished the drive when Sawyer Buettner found Kyle Dalgarno for an eight-yard touchdown catch with 6:19 left.

The Cyclones responded with a big drive that was capped by a 27-yard Van Heerden touchdown run to extend the lead to 22-7. Van Heerden finished with 157 yards rushing.

Just when it looked like the Tornadoes might be down they fought back again. On their first play after the touchdown, tailback Nathan Fall threw the ball to Dalgarno and he out-ran the Cyclones defence for an 81-yard touchdown. The Tornadoes missed the convert making their challenge even bigger, but didn’t quit.

Brennan intercepted his second pass of the game to seal the win in the dying seconds.

Central senior linebacker Braydon Mackey made a pair of huge plays — recovered a Peacock fumble at his own 32 yard line and later intercepting a pass on his own 20.

Bjorge caught five passes for 83 yards and Reegan Carter added four catches for 57 yards. Forbes finished with 151 yards passing.

Tyler Anakaer had two sacks for the Tornadoes. Nathan Fall had 100 yards rushing and Chris Fall ran two fake punts for 48 yards and a pair of first downs to keep drives alive.

The Vanier Vikings remain unbeaten as they clinched first place after beating the Central Cyclones 23-14 in Moose Jaw High School Football League action Thursday evening at Gutheridge Field.

The Vikings wasted no time putting points up on the board, as they led 16-7 at half time. Brandin Cannon had a dominant game as he rushed 13 attempts for 130 yards and had one touchdown in the first half. Cannon finished with 31 carries for 243 yards and two touchdowns in the match. Ryan Froehlich also hit up Keegan Arnyek for  touchdown in the first quarter.

“We wanted to just come in and start running the ball and it seemed to work, so we just kept with it and kept going,” said Brandin Cannon. “It was great blocking up front from the fullbacks and receivers, everybody was just phenomenal blocking today. I didn’t have to make too many moves  before five yards, we had a great push and I owe a lot of thanks to those guys.”

Before the match, the Vikings record was 4-0 and the Cyclones were 4-1. With a Central win, it would have come down to points for first place.

Despite the loss, Cyclones coach Colin Belsher couldn’t have asked for a better game from his team.

“With the exception of the first quarter where we came out a little slow, I thought we battled really hard for the following three quarters,” said Central head coach Colin Belsher. “I told these guys coming in, regardless of the score, we saw improvement from game one and I really think we did.”

The Central Cyclones girls varsity volleyball team clinched first place Tuesday evening with a 3-1 over the Vanier Spirits.

Winning set scores were 25-12, 25-16, and 25-21. The Spirits won the third set 25-23.

“At times they did things well,” said Central’s assistant coach Carrie Mullen. “Sometimes, I think they just need to work on the mental part of the game.”

The first two sets were all Cyclones, as they dominated the play at the net and on serves.
